Impressions - Total War: Shogun 2 / Dragon Age II / Yakuza 4 (PC/PS3/PS3)
I have to keep this fairly short since I have work in about 50 minutes. (Have to shower/shave)
Total War: Shogun 2 (PC)
I haven’t played any of the previous iterations of the Total War Franchise, only Rome: Total War, that’s it. I’ve seen gameplay videos of the others, but that’s it.
Considering my love for the Sengoku Era of Japan, this game was right up my alley.
The game looks good (if my parent’s laptop could run it at max it would look good, the campaign map is basically the same mechanic as the previous games.
The Battle map is better too, now there’s a slow motion button (I think there’s one in Empire: Total War, not sure), so you can watch over your units better while you fight the enemy. Units are many as always. The demo is limited to Unit scale of Medium. But that’s at least 40 to 60 units per squad. So… it can get pretty crazy if the full game has about 3000-5000 people fighting each other on the same map. (that’s a rough estimate of how many people would be on screen if in the full game, the Unit Scale is maxed)
In the demo, you control the Daimyo (Warlord), Chosokabe Motochika (Last Name, First Name respectively), as you learn and takeover Shikoku island, and then start your invasion on the mainland.
Game is fun. I love this series. And the demo if you’re willing to wait for the download (it’s 5GB… yes… 5GB). Get it. You won’t be disappointed.
Dragon Age 2 (PS3)
The demo I’ve been waiting for, even though it’s apparently the demo from PAX Prime this year.
Graphics are vastly improved. And just look cleaner, well polished.
Art style, it’s different. But it still looks really good.
Gameplay… seems… dumbed down, though improved. I was ok with auto fighting in the first one. This time, it seems just like a button masher with skills on Square/Circle/Triangle.
Combat is better though, for sure. Everything is more seamless, and the new skills/abilities are better too. (Cone of Cold is still good, but a little less powerful than last game).
Garret Hawke (First name is default, you keep the last name) is just asking for the obvious pottymouth name change (I’ll leave you to figure that out)
Kate Mulgrew comes back as Flemeth… but as a weird, sexy looking Flemeth… it’s kind of awkward… really awkward.
I like how Flemeth briefly mentioned the Grey Wardens of DA1, and how Hawke and his family “just missed them”. (LOL CROSSING PATHS DENIED)
And another thing to point out. A couple things have been “Mass Effected”. Pause Menu is a radial menu at first and conversation choices are now radial (I liked the old system better, as it seemed to say exactly what you want to say.
Considering it’s changes, I’m glad it’s moving forward. Not entirely happy with some changes. But if it grows on me, and by God it will. Then I’m pretty sure it’ll be GOTW, if I don’t get Skyrim or Uncharted 3. Game comes out early March (There’s a date, I’ve just forgotten it.)
Yakuza 4 (PS3)
Demo isn’t long at all. It’s just a showcase of all the characters you’ll be playing as.
The first guy (Shun) is quick and is all about kicks. All his charge attacks are great too. His special attacks are great crowd controllers. I have a feeling I’ll like him just as much as Kazuma.
Second guy (Masayoshi) Jiu-Jitsu and Akido is his speciality. And they’re really awesome when you figure out HE’s the one that uses them. I didn’t actually use his moves until near the end of his fight sequence. But they looked awesome regardless.
Third guy (Taiga) is the big guy of the group. Slow but powerful hits. And can lift up big guys with ease. I didn’t really like him because he doesn’t have the double charge attacks (after executing one charge attack, he’d execute another)
And last but certainly not least, The Dragon of Dojima, Kazuma, front man of the series. His attacks are basically the same, albeit a couple upgrades. But all in all, still awesome. Still badass. Still my favourite character of last year.
And that was it… seriously. Game is gonna drop in March. So get it. For serious. I loved Yakuza 3, so I’ll love 4 as well.
And that’s it. Hopefully, this has given you a taste of what you should get this March. Or whenever Shogun 2 comes out. (This year, right?)
Coca-Cola announces their partnership with iconic electronic duo Daft Punk for their latest limited edition “Club Coke” bottles. The bottles come in silver and gold (just like the helmets the duo is known to wear) and will come in a limited edition box set available by collete in Paris. The release for this set is beginning of March 2011 so be on the lookout for the official news which should appear on daftcoke.com.
The official commercial for this project will appear on French television and radio beginning March 4, 2011. Below is a sneak preview…
My brother said that it’s possible people’s PS3s are bricking because they may have home-brewed/ hacked content on their system. I sorta did for MW2, but that was on my old HD. I know you had the internal clock problem from last year. But I doubt that would have anything to do…
Then I guess it’s a good thing I have a TV that goes 1080i anyway. Feel bad for the 1080p-ers
